Rahul Gandhi files nomination in Wayanad, thousands cheer him

Wayanad, Apr 4 (IANS): Thousands gave a rousing welcome to Congress President Rahul Gandhi who filed his Lok Sabha nomination from Wayanad in Kerala on Thursday morning.

Arriving on a helicopter from Kozhikode, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi drove to the Wayanad Collector's office some 500 meters away, all the time cheered by people packing both sides of the road.

Amid tight security, only a few persons were allowed to go in with them.

The Gandhis later boarded an open jeep for a road show in Wayanad, one of the economically backward regions of Kerala, accompanied by Congress General Secretary Oommen Chandy.

Police personnel found it tough to handle the surging crowds. The situation became more difficult whenever Rahul Gandhi shook hands with supporters.

Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from both Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, his traditional Lok Sabha constituency, as well as Wayanad.

Kerala goes to the polls on April 23 to elect 20 MPs.

At one time, there were heated exchanges between Congress leaders and Special Protection Group (SPG) officials after the latter insisted that the proposed road show might not happen due to security concerns.

But in the end the Congress leadership won the tussle.

The crowds were delirious.

"I have seen Indira Gandhi when she came to Kozhikode many years back. Now I am excited that I have seen her grandchildren. I am very happy," beamed a 78-year-old Muslim woman.

Another group of Congress activists shouted: "Rahul will win with a massive margin never seen in Kerala."

    I just wonder why Priyanka did not enter politics much earlier? She has got such a charisma and oratory skills that she would have easily become the PM of India by now.
    She definitely carries the genes of her great grandmother and the boldest PM the country has ever seen and the one who sacrificed her life for the country, Mrs. Indira Gandhi
    Though Rahul is not a match to Priyanka, he will win both the seats as the people are just waiting kick feku out like a football.

    Modi and his bhahths are very well aware of this reality. In fact Sushma Swaraj in her last speech at UNO has narrated all these points while comparing the directions that Pakistan and India took post independence and Rahul Gandhi duly had thanked her for acknowledging INC'c contribution towards the growth of this nation. But now out of sheer greed for power he is selling these lies, and as for bhakths, well, you can't wake up someone who's pretending to be asleep, can you?

    Agree with most of the pointts, but when a single family holds power, if they had not done this, probably India would have been another Pakistan or Somalia. Changes take place over a period of time . How fast they take place and what benefit bthe people get is thr questions. Compare india with Japan and see where we are.Both started rebuilding the country after 1947
