Mumbai: Police arrest man stalking student

Mumbai, Apr 7: A 24-year-old man who allegedly stalked a college student was arrested by Dongri police on April 5.

The arrested youth has been identified as Shalmon Gaikwad, a resident of Prabhadevi. Gaikwad has been booked under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354D (Stalking) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code against Gaikwad.

He was produced before a local court on Saturday which remanded him to police custody, said a police source, requesting anonymity.

The victim in her statement alleged that in December 2018, Gaikwad had attempted to talk to her and tried to be intimate with her, but she ignored his advances. The victim also alleged that Gaikwad followed her to college at Girgaum Chowpatty.

"Women safety is one of the priorities of Mumbai Police. We appeal to women to come forward and raise voice against harassment that they face," said the officer.
