Election Commission Finds Varun Gandhi Guilty of Provocative Speech

Times of India

NEW DELHI, Mar 22: The Election Commission on Sunday found the BJP leader and candidate from Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi, guilty of anti-Muslim speeches which  sparked off widespread criticism.

The Election Commission rejected Varun’s reply, expressing dissatisfaction over it. The commission has also advised the party to not issue him a ticket to fight the Lok Sabha elections.

While Gandhi in his reply to the EC's notice had claimed that the CD, containing his alleged hate-speech, was doctored, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami had gone on record stating that the onus was on Gandhi to prove that the tape was doctored.

In its reply, BJP distanced itself from Gandhi's hate speeches and told EC that his remarks did not represent the views of the party.

It, however, asked the poll panel to check the genuineness of the CD containing the comments.

Gandhi was slapped with a notice for making speeches that had communal overtones during his rallies in Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.

It is good that Mr. Gopalaswamy as CEC has found guilty of Varun Gandhi’s hate speech. If Mr. Chawla was in-charge of CEC bjp would have banged him in the media and all over India.

Good Decesion EC. Despite this order, if BJP fields this  derogatory hero, the whole nation should sideline the entire BJP itself. BJP is now loosing its popularity  due to such immature candidates

Thank God, Mr Gopalswami is still the CEC, or else the BJP would have blamed Mr Navin Chawla as being partial. Now the BJP is in a tight spot and this episode has exposed its fundamentalist agenda. Varun's speech is one of the most disgusting and filthy one ever made by an Indian politician. It has truly exposed his dark side.

I welcome the decision of Election Commission of India terming the speech of Varun Gandhi as derogatory, provocative and unacceptable. This should be a warning sign for all those for whom provocative speech is a short cut to come to sudden fame.

Also, the EC has put BJP in a tight position - legally BJP can reject the suggestion of EC but if BJP fields Varun in spite of EC's strictures against Varun, BJP will be seen in a bad light.

So.. the CD has not been doctored. Meaning Varun actually said that he would cut the hands of those who will raise a finger towards Hindus ! Does that mean that Indians wait and watch as places of worship razed down, women hit ? What a liberty we have accomplished !
