Mangaluru: MLA Vedavyas Kamath blames Congress for city's water woes

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (AM)

Mangaluru, Apr 29: Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath on Monday, April 29 alleged that Congress leaders in the previous government did not take any measures to solve problems of drinking water in their tenure which has led to shortage and rationing of water in the district.

Addressing media, Kamath said, “BJP government took the decision to increase the height of Thumbe vented dam. Even though the new vented dam can store around 7 metres of water, we are forced to store only 6 metres of water now due to technical reasons.

"Congress government and the existing coalition government did not take any measures to provide compensation to people who lost their land. Therefore, leaders of Congress party and the ruling coalition government in the state is responsible for the water shortage here,” he said.

Pointing out loopholes in implementing the drinking water projects undertaken during the first phase of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded scheme, Kamath said that a total of Rs 160 crore was spent in the first phase of the ADB scheme to provide water to the people which has not happened till now. He said that to ensure proper implementation of the ADB funded scheme, a third party inspection agency should be deployed as Rs 461 crore has been released for the second phase of scheme and there should be no misuse at any cost.

Kamath further alleged that Congress leaders and corporators do not even call the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) engineers to solve problems when public approach them.

However, Kamath supported water rationing in the city in the present circumstances and also said that people should not waste water unnecessarily.

BJP leaders Nithin Kumar, Ravishankar Mijar, Premananda Shetty and others were present.

    "technical reasons" - What nonsense!!
If you increase the water level beyond 6 metres at Thumbe, it will submerge the fields and houses along the river bank. That area is so densely populated, it's not even worth moving forward..
Meanwhile why can't govt take control of the Shamboor dam (it's around 19 metres high), instead of allowing MSEZ to use the water as they wish. Let them find some other source of water. River water is meant for the public, not for some greedy industries (that hardly employ any locals anyway).

These politicians and their chelas give damn to the problem of public except their interests. After all, the public had elected him, not based on past performance and we are paying the heavy price.

This is dangerous thinking, no different from xenophobic nationalistic views. Our people also travel and work all over the world, so they should stop providing me with water in the industry work in because they don't discriminate in who they employ?
India being agrarian country needs rapid Industrialization to bring people out of poverty. Agriculture that is practiced is largely unsustainable and these people need other forms employment
Further Industrial usage of water is hardly 20 % in India. more than 60 % of water is mostly guzzled into farmlands in an inefficient manner in a subsidized manner and this needs to be changed to conserve water
industrial usage of water needs to regulated, but curtailing water to them is going to hurt us a lot, we are a developing economy with large section of youth struggling for employment and economic activities needs to spurred.
I suggest you research more about water usage in India and not conclude in haste where the problem lies. Efficient usage of water is a must in a water-stressed country like ours, growing of water-intensive crops for export like Rice, sugarcane needs to stop because we are ultimately underselling them at our own expense. Focusing on exports that require less water like cashew, mango, etc can help us allocate more water to domestic and industrial use.
I'm in short of time, if you have not understood my point I can elaborate further and guide you to sources as this is a subject I have studied hard and long I can help people understand better
    Thanks
    Karthik
