Silicon Valley, Apr 1: An Indian engineer killed two of his children and three other relatives, including a toddler, before turning the gun on himself in a "horrific" shooting rampage in a posh Silicon Valley neighbourhood.

The lone survivor in the murder-suicide in Santa Clara area of California was the wife of the 42-year-old man who escaped with multiple gunshot wounds and collapsed in a pool of blood outside her home. She is fighting for her life at a local hospital, police said.

They said a neighbour called 911 at around 8:30 pm Sunday to report an injured woman outside a house on Headen Way in the high-end neighbourhood of Rivermark.

Police arrived to find five bodies in the house, all shot dead. The suspected gunman was dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local media reports said. "There's no way to describe it other than horrific," Lt Phil Cooke of the Santa Clara Police was quoted as saying.

The youngest victim was an 11-month-old girl who was alive when police came but later died at a hospital.

Investigators said the man lived at the recently rented house with his wife and two children, aged 11 and 4.

The other victims -- a young married couple and their daughter -- had recently arrived from India and are believed to be relatives of the alleged killer's wife. The identities of the victims were not being immediately released as authorities sought to contact relatives.

"We've been working with the Indian Consulate office in San Francisco," Lt Cooke said.

Investigators was yet to ascertain the motive but said financial issues did not appear to be a factor.

"It's devastating for everybody involved, the victims, the community and the first responders," said Cpt Mike Sellers. "Some of our officers performed CPR on the girl who was around 4 years old, but she was pronounced dead."

Sellers said he did not believe the suspect left a suicide note. The man was said to be an engineer at Yahoo who also had worked at Microsoft.

Residents of the upscale community of Rivermark, where the shootings occurred, were horrified.

"I can't imagine someone shooting little children. It's awful," neighbour Ivy Hopkins told San Francisco Chronicle.

Two handguns were found inside the residence, but police are awaiting the results of ballistics tests before determining whether one or both weapons were used.

Till investigations are complete, we should refrain from concluding on the killer. Having said that, I must admit that I cannot believe that anybody in this world can even think of harming little children leave alone killing. Not to say that killing adults is fine but children.....god....they really do not know what they do.

I don't think that killing especailly little ones can even be forgivehn by God.....I sincerely pray for all of them especially the children. Dear Children...sorry for what has happenned but please pray for humanity, peace and understanding to prevail. God....please...help...we will not be able to bear so much...the world is going in the wrong direction.....

The Rivermark area is very close to where I live. This news has come as a major shock to all of us. The motive for the killing is not yet known. I feel especially sad that this person has taken the lives of his kids who have not yet got a chance to see life. We should all take a step back and acknowledge the fact that this rat race is not worth it.

This is one of the result of hate which one stores within in mind, body, soul and emotions. Hate speech, hate thinking are people who are prejudice and always come to prior conclusion is that they are only right and others are wrong. Those who do not follow them, they want to eradicate them and this is precisely what happened Any person who practice forgiveness to others and think good, positive about our every members of the society for them the world looks beautiful and better. At least let the society open their eyes and realize the result of hate. Lord please give the strength to the bereaved members of the family to bear this great loss. May their soul rest in peace

Two families living under one roof! Does not work in USA. Better learn from this example. Similar thing happened in Chicago in the 80's. Th expectation of newly arrived young family is totally different than the family living in this country for a while. The integration of this type of families had not worked in the past. While the source of the problem between the problem is not known, the fact that two families were living under one roof creates a lot of adverse conditions, very difficult to resolve, ultimately yields to hatred. Very sorry for the kids who had no chance to have a life of their own.
