Udupi, May 6: The public in the city is facing a hard time due to lack potable water. There is a huge government well near Janatha Vyayama School at Doddannagudde ward. There is enough water in the well. However, the water is not fit for consumption as it contains lots of worms.

The residents and Nagarika Samiti here have urged the administration to get the water of this well cleaned immediately, so that the public can make use of the water that is available in the well.

This well was built by the Grama Samiti in the year 1960. An inscription in this regard is available on the pillar of the well. The underground water level in this well is very good. That is why this well brims with water even during summer. Unfortunately, the water of the well cannot to be used for domestic purposes as it contains germs and dirt. Lots of thorns and bushes have grown on the inside wall of the well. The leaves of these plants fall in the water and get decomposed. Due to this and the presence of germs in the water, the colour of the water is changed completely and a bad odour surrounds the area. Since many years the silt deposited in the well is not cleaned. The locals say that some years ago, the locals themselves had cleared the silt from the well.

According to Nityananda Olakadu and Tharanath Mesta Shiroor, activists of Nagarika Samiti, the city administration has to drain out the present water from the well completely. The silt deposited in the well should be removed. The pest and plants that have grown on the inside of the well need to be removed. Also the branches of the trees that are bending towards the well need to be cut. If these works are carried out, the people of this locality can make good use of the water of this well even during summer. 

The members of Nagarika Samiti opine that there are several government wells in the city which are in a similar state. If they are maintained well, the present water shortage situation can be managed properly.
