Mangaluru, May 7: The police have been receiving complaints about foul smell emanated by vehicles transporting fish and other problems created by them to the environment and road users. Many of the complaints were received during the department's weekly phone-in programme.

The department said that it has since studied guidelines prescribed by National Green Tribunal (southern zone) pertaining to Kerala on this issue. The department wants to strictly enforce these rules here and explained the rules to the participants of a meeting of fish transporters organized by the department.

Police notice was served on these transporters on May 6, asking them to strictly abide by the following rules:

1. Al fish carrying vehicles should be adequately insulated and made leak proof.

2. The fish should be transported in crates in order to prevent seepage of melted ice.

3. The water that spills and also melted ice from craters should be diverted and collected in waste water collection tanks of adequate size (like 50 liters capacity for vehicles carrying one tonne of fish) that are fitted to the vehicles exclusively for this purpose.

The city police commissioner has asked police personnel and other concerned departments to make sure that these rules are strictly enforced.
