Mangaluru May 7: Former president of District Bar Association S P Chengappa demanded that CBI should probe the death of IPS officer Madhukar Shetty.

Addressing media here on Tuesday, May 7, S P Chengappa said, "Madhukar Shetty IPS was a son of this soil. He was a non-corrupt, straight forward officer. He fought against corruption and illegal activities. Madhukar Shetty was made the SP of Chamarajanagar and Chikkamagaluru during his tenure and he has done a tremendous job. Even a village in Chikkamagaluru is named after this brave officer.”

“Even during his Lokayukta tenure, he traced Bellary mining lobby despite the government being in power. Madhukar Shetty has done thorough investigation and uncovered this lobby,” he said.

Chengappa pointed out that Shetty’s death was mysterious and was due to wrong diagnosis. “Madhukar Shetty was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad for lung infection treatment. But the doctor wrongly diagnosed it as H1N1 and the treatment was started for the same. Midway the doctor realised that it was a lung infection and hence he started treatment for lung infection. However, this cost Madhukar Shetty his life,” SP Chengappa pointed out.

“The whole nation has raised suspicions about the circumstances that led to his death. The ministers have also claimed that there is some foul play in his death so this suspicion has to be cleared. A doctors’ committee has been formed to trace the truth behind the death of Madhukar Shetty. This committee includes well known doctor Dr Devi Prasad Shetty,” Chengappa revealed.

“We are waiting for the committee report. If the committee report reflects foul play, then government should refer the case to CBI or else there a state-wide agitation will be held," he warned.

"Home minister MB Patil had said that a Police Training Centre will be established at Mysore in memory of Madhukar Shetty. But no steps have been taken so far and we demand this should be established at the earliest. Madhukar Shetty is a source of inspiration for Civil Service aspirants. Government should initiate an academic programme to encourage the youngsters to follow the footsteps of late Madhukar Shetty,” said SP Chengappa.
