'VVPAT verification may delay Lok Sabha results to May 24' - EC sources

New Delhi, May 8 (IANS): The Lok Sabha elections results may be delayed a day due to increased number of VVPAT verifications, sources in the Election Commission said on Tuesday.

"As per the previous plan, the results of the elections are scheduled to be declared on May 23. But the results may be delayed and the final results may be declared to May 24 due to increased number of VVPAT verifications," the official said, requesting anonymity.

Explaining the reason behind the delay, the EC official said that an increase in the number of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) verification from one to five polling booths in each Assembly segment of a Parliamentary constituency, as directed by the apex court on April 8, could delay the counting by more than five-six hours and the final tally is likely to be clear on May 24.

In a setback to the Opposition, the Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to increase the count for verification of VVPAT slips with EVMs in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

The Supreme Court has also agreed to a review of its earlier VVPAT verification as the opposition parties are demanding 50 % VVPAT verification.

It is extremely difficult to trust EVM and EC in Modis era!!! is Modi played a cunning role to delay the result with EC? Money power can buy everything even supreme court judges or Election commissioner in India atleast.

The machines were in use in India since a long time. Why nobody insisted on VVPAT for the State Election held in 2018? No complaint was lodged against EC for EVM during by election where ruling party lost ?
So all oppostion r making advance alebi for their defeat on May?
Why no It expert from any oppostion parties appeared during the chalkange offered by EC to prove the tempering of EVMs?

Appoint more people & counters with more representatives of parties so that the counting can be smooth & transparent way to get a democratic govt., chosen by people & not by rigged or tampered machines that can be manipulated by programmers.
Silly excuses are not good, better late than never. 5 year term need not be decided by single day results when we are ready to wait for more than a month for the votes that have been cast last month.

When Supreme Court itself STAMPS VVPAT verification may be done for five booths of one assembly constituency, ITSELF SHOWS EVM CANNOT BE TRUSTED. IF SO WHY ONLY FIVE? TO SAVE DEMOCRACY OF INDIA, SUPREME COURT AT THIS JUNCTURE MUST ASK EC TO COUNT ALL VVPAT SLIPS, AND THEN BAN EVM AND SAVE INDIAN DEMOCRACY..

It clearly illustrates 1 thing. EC is certain that even in that 5 VVPAT results that emerge will have dicrepancies. It is preparing a ground to work out a way to get around with it.

It is its job to tell the country, what action plan they have on place when dicrepancies are found. But they won't tell us now.

Our democracy and freedom is at stake beware.

Are VVPAT for exhibition then? Why did v bring in these machines when it's slips will not be counted.

Whether it takes one day or one week it does not matter. We want a govt which is chosen by the people and not by EC or any others. Let's b transparent in knowing the genuine result.

    India can WAIT, Can't She??

They have already mentioned to Apex court that if more VVPAT to be verified it will take more time. It depends upon how much %of VVPAT to be verified. Initially it was 2 per constituency which was later increased to 5 and oppostion demanded initially 50%but Apex court did not agreed so they pleaded for at least 25%which was also not agreed. So after Apex court gave its verdict yesterday EC announced about the delay which it had said before 1st phase
