SC wants to meet wife of IPS officer who committed suicide

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Thursday said that it will meet, in July, the wife of a former IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, who committed suicide and held Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "directly responsible" for his death.

Gaurav Dutt, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was reportedly found with a slit wrist at his home on February 19.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it will interact with Sreyashi Dutt in July to find out why she wants to withdraw her plea for an independent inquiry into the death of her husband.

She has sought to withdraw her petition, saying she was not in a proper mental condition while filing the case.

Dutt, who had taken voluntary retirement last year, wrote in his suicide note that Banerjee was "directly responsible" for his suicide by constantly "victimising" him for the past 10 years.

The state's ruling Trinamool Congress, however, rubbished the allegations.
