Priyadarshini Mattoo case convict granted parole for law exam

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted three-week parole to Santosh Kumar Singh, who is serving a life term for the rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo in 1996, to take the LLM examination.

Justice Mukta Gupta said that Singh's examination is scheduled to begin on May 24, and therefore, he should be released on May 21. She also noted that the Delhi government did not place any objection to Singh's parole plea.

Singh is to appear in the final year examination of LLM.

Mattoo, 25, was raped and murdered in January 1996 and fellow law student Singh, son of a former IPS officer, accused of the crime. He was acquitted by a trial court in December 1999, but in October 2006, the Delhi High Court convicted him and sentenced him to capital punishment.

Singh challenged his conviction and sentence in the apex court, which in October 2010, upheld his conviction, but commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment.
