Marc Wilmots appointed Iran's football team coach

Tehran, May 15 (IANS): Former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to sign a contract with the country's football national team until 2022, replacing Carlos Queiroz.

Wilmots visited Iran's football federation facilities ahead of signing the official agreement. The contract is worth $1,200,000, according to Iranian media reports.

Wilmots was a midfielder in several clubs during his career and played in four World Cups with his national team, reports Efe news.

He will coach Iran after managing the Ivory Coast national team since 2017.

Queiroz, who is to lead the Colombian national team, qualified the Iranians for two World Cups, in Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, in both of which they were eliminated in the group stage.
