Panaji, May 27: Biodiversity board of the state of Goa held an exhibition cum sale of the produce grown there recently. The event was held in a mall in Porvorim in order to generate income for owners of farms in villages. Information on local varieties of fruits and vegetable were put up by the biodiversity board in the premises.

Dhaitanya Malik of Malik’s farm said that he has been farming for the last four years despite being a computer engineer. “There was need to upkeep the ancestral property that we have in Pernem. I was able to sell items worth about Rs 7,000,” he said.

The participants said that the fruits in the exhibition are given more time to become ripe and the fruits and vegetable are healthier and taste better unlike those grown commercially. “No chemicals are used to make them grow fast or look colorful. Therefore, local products should be bought,” said Dayanand Faldessai, another seller. The farmers said that the colour and taste of fruits may vary depending on the climatic conditions and the way they are grown.
