Bengaluru: Congress sweeps elections to urban local bodies across state

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 31: BJP's sweep in the recent Lok Sabha elections seemed to have had little to no impact on the elections to urban local bodies (ULBs), as the Congress won a majorty of the seats across Karnataka.

The results of the elections to 56 ULBs were declared on Friday May 31. The polling was held on May 29 in 1,221 wards across the state, comprising 7 city municipal councils, 33 town municipal councils and 22 town panchayats.

Altogether, Congress has won 509 out of 1221 wards, while BJP has secured wins in 366 wards, and JD(S) came third, winning 174 wards.

This means, out of a total of 56 town and city municipalities that went to polls, the Congress will rule in 37 and BJP in about 16. The Congress and the JD(S) fought the elections separately.

Among the city municipal councils, the Congress won in four - Hiriyur, Shidlaghatta, Basavakalyan and Shahpur, totally winning 90 out of 217 seats. The BJP won in two CMCs - Tiptur and Nanjangud - totalling 56 seats; and the JD(S) won in Harihar with a total of 38 seats.

The Congress also swept the town municipal council elections, winning 322 seats out of a total of 714, while BJP came second with 184 seats and JD(S) third with 102 seats. As reported earlier, the BJP won the Mooobdri TMC, defeating the Congress by one seat.

In the elections to the town panchayats, it is the BJP which had the upper hand, winning 126 out of a total of 290 seats, with Congress coming second with 97 seats, and JD(S) third with 34 seats. In Mulky, the BJP won 8 seats while the Congress won 8, and JD(S) secured 1.

Just wondering if the voting happened with paper ballots or EVM's ???
If paper ballots then all elections must be held using paper ballots, evm's cant be trusted, they can be hacked and individual party people manipulate them.

Just cant trust our politicians :)
Congress winning the election in good numbers shows they still have grass root support and they can work harder to win the lok saba in 2024.

HOW it's possible??? only 15 days back people seemed to be overwhelmingly "supported" BJP/RSS. & in 15 days they turned their back to saffron & now they are back magically with CONGRESS!!!!
THIS clearly & irrefutably indicates some kind of EVM tampering across the nation.atleast in 150+ seats in various states possibly BJP/RSS strategically hacked EVM.
SINCE it needs highly secretive operation it has to be done with highly motivated RSS workers(there are plenty of them!)& foreign hand.. & here comes the Israel, it fits the bill perfectly.ISRAEL is very close to RSS/BJP for decades & ideologically its in same wavelength.very few highly placed officers along with NSA ajith doval & israels technical support this operation might've been carried out.they'd tested this when feku was CM of gujrat & then on national scale.
THERE's no way congress can win these elections if EVM are allowed never.

Real fact is majority want Modi at the centre. They are least bothered about the parties in local elections, where even party symbols are not used. This is the real fact which we have to accept gracefully.

an indicator - how different results can be obtained by adopting ballot papers rather than the EVMs. There is something fishy. If a Computer can be hacked from anywhere online, why not the EVM. The true story is know to the masterminds - if such a thing has happened. Just after a week, the local bodies can not dump BJP and choose congress and jds so broadly. So where is the problem.... guess

In local body elections people vote for the candidate rather than the party. Even party symbols are not used in local elections. Many people do not know who belongs to which party. Whereas in parliamentary elections people vote for the PM since independence.

Next election the EVMs should be discontinued and instead Optical Scanning Voting Machines should be used. Optical scan voting machines use paper ballots that are marked by the voter and then scanned for electronic tabulation. If there are doubts of rigging on the electronic tabulation , the ballots can be counted manually.
The opposition should insist on them now so they are implemented in 5 years .

Provided EC agrees to counting as of now there is no support from EC to count the VVPATs. surprising. whichever party wins should depend upon who the citizens vote for after seeing the work they have done in their respective constituency, citizens mandate should always be of utmost importance in elections else democracy is a big failure.
