New Delhi, Apr 29: The Army and the Navy have been placed on high alert along the country's southern coast to prevent any infiltration bid by Tamil tiger cadres fleeing the military offensive against them in Sri Lanka, a top commander said on Wednesday.

"There is a high alert in the southern command," Indian Army vice chief Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj told reporters here.

"The Coast Guard and the Indian Navy form the first tier (of defence). We have some troops deployed to ensure LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) don't enter (Tamil Nadu).

He was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on 'Combating Climate Change by Management of Ozone Depleting Substance'.

After the Sri Lankan armed forces confined LTTE to a small area, there were reports of possibility of the LTTE cadres trying to infiltrate into India.

When asked whether the LTTE cadres had made any such attempts, he said, "As of now, there are no reports from our troops, especially the Coast Guard and the Navy, about any bids by LTTE to cross over."
