Black Money Stashed Abroad - Govt Files Affidavit in SC

TOI

New Delhi, May 2: Under pressure to bring back the black money stashed in Swiss bank accounts, the Centre on Saturday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on the issue.

The Union government told the Supreme Court that it was doing everything on the issue of retrieving over Rs 70 trillion ($1.4 trillion) in black money believed to be stashed away in foreign banks by rich Indians.

The government said this in an affidavit filed in the apex court in response to a lawsuit by former union law minister Ram Jethmalani, former Lok Sabha general secretary Subhash C Kashyap and former Punjab Police chief KPS Gill, which had sought the court's direction to the government to retrieve the unaccounted money.

In its affidavit, the government termed the lawsuit as "politically motivated" and questioned the timing of its filing, in the midst of the general elections, and sought its dismissal.

The Centre also told the apex court about the re-opening of the assessment of suspected cases. It further stated that it was monitoring the economic trend.

Famous for its secret accounts, Swiss banks have highest deposits by Indians. The revelation came after Swiss banks were forced by the US and other Western countries to disclose the details of their nationals who maintain accounts with them.

The issue was raked up by the main opposition party, the BJP and was used as their main poll plank in the ongoing General elections.

The Swiss banks do not keep the money in safe deposit lockers, but invest in stocks & bonds and advance loans. The stocks are almost 50% down now and many borrowers are not able to repay their loans. If the Indian Govt. try to retrieve the money to India at present situation, the Swiss banks will go bankrupt and no one gets anything! It reminds me of a saying in Kannada - "Kottadhu Thanage buchittadu pararighe"

I very much doubt! black money from swiss account because whose money it is ? who has taken out from India ? First of all our taxation is horrible, rich business people make money and send abroad to keep as a SAFE HEAVEN. who are business tycoons they are god father of politicians. In the parliament anybody will ever say openly that they do not have their money in swiss account either in their own name or relatives, freinds. No one will dare to do it.

Do not forget Indians are so clever the day govt. prepares to bring the money from swiss the same money will flow like water from swiss to some other safe heaven. It will take a long time to realise this dream of ours. It is better govt. relaxes taxation laws and try to get more income with stringent action within India. Even incometax officers make money thru bribes from non tax payers within India forget about outside country.

May be it is a poll gimmick. But it is the responsibility of the out going and New government, to initiate sincere efforts to bring back the un accounted money. It is difficult and cumbersome process but it is not impossible. Then only we can boast of our Politicians, calling them Desh Bhakts. If it really happens, then we can dream of becoming no.1 country in the world.

The wealth belongs to India and must be brought back to India as it rightfully belongs to every citizen. The names of the robbers and exporters of Indian booty must be made public. This money should be used for grass root developments and upbringing of the poor and economically deprived and less previliged section of the society. Both the ruling and opposition must act together on this matter for the welfare of the nation.
