Bengaluru: Four die due to rains in state, lightning causes damages in coast

Bengaluru, Jun 7: The state of Karnataka including the coast received good rains on the wee hours of Thursday, June 6. Some houses in the coastal districts were damaged due to lightning. Four people lost their lives in other parts of the state due to rains.

In many parts of the Dakshina Kannada district, including Vittal, Bantwal, Mangaluru, Beltangady, Puttur and Moodbidri, rain with thunder and lightning that started at around 12.30 am continued to pour for the next one and a half hours. On the morning of Thursday, June 6, Moodbidri, Haleangady and some parts of Mangaluru received a light drizzle.

In the district of Udupi, places like Padubidri, Mulky, Kaup, Belman, Shirva, Brahmavar, Halady, Koteshwara, Beejadi, Shiroor and Byndoor received moderate rains.

The house of Bharat Kumar, son of Rukmayya Poojary, a resident of Sajipamunnur village of Bantwal taluk got damaged due to lightning. The electrical wiring of the house was burnt due to short circuit. In addition, the wall of the house got cracked and the coconut trees got damaged. The cattle that were in the cowshed also got affected due to lightning. Revenue officers visited the spot and estimated the loss and submitted the report to Bantwal Tahsildar.

Thekkatte area received good rains and the house of Yakshagana artiste Arebailu Ramakrishna Hebbar got damaged due to lightning. The electrical appliances and the solar wiring were completely damaged. The backside wall of the house got virtually cracked as the lightning passed through that wall. The inmates of the house were awakened when the splinter of wall stones fell on them. When they got up and saw, the whole house was up in smoke as per the information given by Vandana Hebbar, housewife of the house. The loss is estimated to be around Rs 30,000. Village accountant Deepika Shetty and Malyadi Shivarama Shetty, former president of gram panchayat visited the house and did the inspection of the spot.

A house in Savanoor got damaged due to lightning. The house belonged to Chennavara Patte Chandrahasa Rai, a resident of Paltady village. Electrical appliances including the electricity meter are completely burnt due to the strike of lightning. Last year also some areca nut trees of the same house got destroyed due to lightning strike.

Many parts of Karnataka including Bengaluru received good rains on wee hours of Thursday. Four people died due to the rains. Sahara Banu (9) died when the roof of her house collapsed in Harapanahalli. Farmer Yellappa Satyappa Badu Guruva (60) of Hukkeri taluk died when the wall of his house collapsed. N Siddappa (30) of Koodlige taluk and Basappa Husanappa Sitannavara (40) of Beelagi taluk died when lightning struck them.
