Man drives speeding car over pavement dwellers, one dead


New Delhi, Jun 22 (IANS): A man was arrested for allegedly driving his car over a group of pavement dwellers, killing one of them and injuring three others, in Delhi's Nizamuddin on Friday, police said.

The police identified the accused as Abhishek Dutt (36), who was driving along Neela Gumbad, Mathura Road in Hazrat Nizamuddin area, when he allegedly ran a group of pavement dwellers over.

Police said, Dutt was driving a Honda WRV, which was recovered by the police from the crime spot. Dutt was arrested after the police received a complaint.

A case has been registered against the accused by the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.

"Four men were rushed to AIIMS, where the doctor declared one of them dead. The other three are reported to be in critical condition." said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (Southeast Delhi).

The victims have been identified as Arif (32), Naushad (23), Sheikh Saju (48) and Sahib Salim (23). Arif was declared dead while others are struggling for their life in AIIMS trauma center.

Police said the accused was drunk and was headed home when he drove his speeding car over the victims.
