End of the Road for L.K. Advani?

End of the road for L.K. Advani?
By Darshan Desai

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS):  Age was not on his side. And now it seems people were not either. Verdict 2009 seems to have dashed the prime ministerial hopes of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'iron man', 81-year-old, L.K. Advani forever.

The 15th Lok Sabha election was arguably his last attempt to get the nation's top job in the twilight of his nearly five-decade-old political career, after being in the shadow of Atal Bihari Vajpayee for long.

Advani - the "symbol of the BJP's ideological battle" as some in the Hindu rightwing fraternity call him - may be the clear winner from his Gandhinagar constituency but lost the bigger fight that he, his family and party members heavily invested in.

With the rival Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) staging spectacular wins, it may well be the end of the road for Advani, whose Somnath to Ayodhya-Ram Janmabhoomi movement had put the right-of-centre party into political reckoning.

"It seems that it is the end of the road for him. He will be too old to contest the polls after five years," political scientist Sudha Pai at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, told IANS.

It was Advani who had taken charge of the BJP's Hindutva campaign, with the Ayodhya movement culminating in the destruction of the Babri mosque in 1992 and putting the party in the political reckoning within less than a decade of returning just two MPs in 1984.

But he lost the script somewhere in the compulsion of coalition politics that catapulted Vajpayee - the party's moderate face - to the post of prime minister, with Advani as the number two.

His later attempts to reposition himself into the secular mode left the BJP leader with no clear identity of his own, some say. It started off with his 2005 Pakistan visit where he praised Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

In his new avatar, Advani also put the cause of the Ram temple on the backburner. He was resurrected by his party and made the prime ministerial candidate since Vajpayee is out of action because of ill health.

Advani spared no effort to reach out to every nook and cranny of the country, travelling more than 60,000-odd km, braving the sweltering heat with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees celsius. The octogenarian even lifted weights and pitched himself in cyberspace.

His backroom boys worked round the clock, while the BJP leader also found time to interact with young and first-time voters on his website.

Advani made a strong case for himself by his continuous tirade against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling him weak and subservient to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. But it didn't work.

"This is clearly a vote for Manmohan Singh, who is clean, capable, educated and intelligent; no other leader, including Advani, has these qualities. Advani lost it for the way he attacked Manmohan Singh, the way he behaved right through the campaign, " says Pai.

The BJP's advertisements pitched Advani as a 'Loh Purush (iron man)', or tough leader, with pictures of him showing his fist.

"Advani is a symbol of the BJP's ideological battle," said Tarun Vijay, former editor of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) mouthpiece Panchjanya.

"There's no question of the end of the road for Advani or anybody. The BJP is not an individual centric party."

But his being projected as the prime ministerial candidate does not seem to have cut much ice with voters. Some sections of the BJP privately said a younger leader like Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi could have probably helped the party do better.

However, party general secretary Arun Jaitley said: "Advani was the NDA's face and this has not affected the party's overall performance."

He clearly failed to recreate the magic of Vajpayee who straddled the political spectrum like a colossus. On Saturday, with the party's debacle, BJP president Rajnath Singh said the party missed Vajpayee in the elections.

And now Advani may not get another chance.

Advanisaab made India up on World Map Chart. Due to demolition of Masjid, people now knows there''s exists one more ancient religion i.e. Hinduism. Earlier, people only knows of Jewism, Christanity and Islam. It''s also one type of great achievement as compare to post of Prime Ministership. Jai Ho BJP.

Yes. Personal Interest or some other Interest, people plunge into Politics. But the taste of Power will make some people to continue in politics. Some will restrain from that if they lost. The ups and downs will be there for everyone. Ideas, concepts may fail. It was the determination that dragged L. K. Advani and Vajpayee to be in Parliament. The determination of changing the Policies of what the Nehru Dynasty not able to solve. They are in opposition more than in Governance. If at all any credit for keeping the much ruled Congress(I) or Congress(X) in the awakened state, that must go to these two stalwarts (Ajatashatru Vajapyee & Iron man Advani).

It is not Politics to give away if lost. It is escaping from responsibility. Real politics is to accept the failure and fight for the cause. That determination is with Vajpayee and Advani still now. Now the age is the only thing that make them give away their fight. But how we can forget their long march without power for the majority of their life. I don''t think we will get such people in future as all of us compromise with our own problems than National Interest. At the moment India needs a dual party system not a multi party one. Multi party is a confusion. Multy party means multiple Ideologies. As long as these multiple ideologies converge there will be no future as the people more involve in back baiting, suppressing the opponents for no cause.

It was Mr. Ramakrishna Hegde who dreamt about Two Party System. Devegowda and his team wiped Ramakrishna Hegde and his dreams out of this world. May we expect such a constitutional change of a shining two party system in our nation ? Let us hope for the best. Good bye to Vajapayeeji and Advaniji. We will rememeber you for long.

Congress has only 206 MPs.Use Yediurappas expertise and not Narendra Modi''s. Operation kamala needed at the national level. A series of Hindus samajotsavas. And then a bit of bajrang dal help in states like goa, Maharashtra, North East and Andhra. Make conversion, cow slaughter, bangladeshis and of course Terrorism (hinting at minorities) the main election plank. And I am sure Advaniji will be PM again.

Yes the intelligent Indian’s majority Hindus have voted for the secular party that’s congress. The total population of India is 1,080,264,400 and the voters have once again showed their will to choose the right. Karnataka is lagging behind people here do not have toilets, roads, plastic garbage fly high scattered all the street side. The highest number of people died on NH 17 on the belt of Mangalore to Kundapura in past few years. India’s wealth the manganese ore is sent to China by illegal mining……………… and look what china does no pools no party no religion no freedom Invasion in Tibet making millions of Hindus and Buddhist flee.

Our Indian system is great except few fanatics who just live like a frog in the well. Poojari no worries we have the center. Ghandi family’s two members have martyred their life their great sacrifice will lead the nation for prosperity and not those who just did not give anything but hate amongst the people.

This is not a warning, just a very kind piece of advice which not only applies to you but everyone - I mean everyone.

Advaniji, If some dignity has left in you, before retiring from politics, you should do the following: 1) Tauba (repentance) from Almighty Allah, for being partnered in demolition of his house (mosque) and an open apology to the muslim community. 2)Seek forgiveness from all indian citizens for dividing india in the name of religion (thus breaking the secular fabric of the society). 3) Last but not the least seek forgiveness from Manmohan Singh for hurting his ego by calling him weak and subservient of Sonia Ghandhi. This would be good for your peaceful retired life and the life hereafter. M.S. Kaup

Mr.Advani..Dear Sir..People,Paper,Media say "End of the Road for Advani".Now you are also thinking like that not because of failure but because of age. You are 81 years old and it is really tough to stay and wait for another 5 years. You didn''t involve in any corruption all these years. That itself is a wonder. (Your party people definitely involved)Your interaction with the people is amazing. Your leadership is excellent. You tried to unite people from Kashmir to Kanyakumari through Yatras.GOOD...but Sir..You did only one mistake in your life. That spolied your whole image. That ONE mistake is equal to Congress people''s 1000 mistakes..

Yes Sir..Babri Masjid demolition. It divided Hindu and muslim..infact you divided INDIA.Till today people are remembering it and attacking you. They don''t have any objection or problem against you except Babri Masjid. Anyway you have to accept the destiny. You could have become great Leader like Indira Ganghi (even her enemies liked her). But you slipped somewhere and you know it very well. Whether you retire or not, I accept you as my LEADER.

Gone are the days to fool people with Ram Mandir and Ram sethu issues. One can fool some people sometimes but not all the people all the time. God (Sri Ram) may not like to have a place for prayer built at the cost of human blood of his own creation. BJP had no intensions in seeing a developed India, rather a divisive India and Hinduthva was their top priority dictated by RSS, which no educated Hindu would ever accept. Hindus all over India understood the value of intelligent and soft-spoken Dr. Manmohan Singh. I am sure all educated people of India wished to see Dr. M. Singh as the Prime Minister for the next five years and the wish is fulfilled. Calling names like, Nikhamma and week Prime Minister will not make a person week rather it shows your own weakness. Mr. Advani tried all his villainous ways and means to fool the people but all in vain. “Mr. Advani, may God give you long life and good health to see a developed and peaceful India.”

I do have major reservation on several areas that Advani has been preaching in last 20 years or so and influencing life of millions of people and his followers, we should wish him well and respect him since he has taken the defeat so well and expressed his intention not to be the leader of opposition in parliment. Let us be considerate and wish him good health and long life.

He has proved that only good performance and doing good work can lift you up and not trying to budge the peace of the the country. I just wonder is Mr. Nagesh Nayak from B''lore also gave up his optical illusion statements like Advani. Where is Mr. Nagesh Nayak who always Writes his name in bold leter ang non sense statements.

One must not forget that Advani is a nationalist and a patriot. Nobody can take that away from him. He could have very well followed in Mr Vajpayee''s footsteps instead of dividing the country through his rath yatra which led to the destruction of the Babri Masjid. He could have shown that he really was a man of steel and a statesman by bringing together the muslim and hindu leaders while he was the Home Minister and once and for all settling the masjid and mandir dispute. He could have shown that he really was a man of steel by sacking Modi immediately after the Gujarat riots. He could have again earned lots of respect by throwing out Varun Gandhi after his communal outburst. Instead he chose a shortcut thinking that was the shortest way to get power. He won the minor battles in Philibit, Karnataka and Gujarat, but lost the war completely. For Advani it is too late now, but before he leaves, i hope he is able to bring in a change within the party by analyzing his failures, so that the BJP comes forth as a strong nationalist middle path party which embraces all communities and says no to communal politics and communal leaders. The country requires such a party, but it is entirely up to their leadership and chose either a path of divide and destruction OR unity and nation building.

The Jana Sangh, then BJP had clear ideas of secular India with total inclusion of Hindutva till 1990. In their original draft the Jana Sangh wanted to include the Hindutva ideologies like Western Christian secular democracies. With repeated failures of Congress like freedom fighting entity Indian National Congress Split in 1968 caused by Indira Gandhi, Emergency and suspension of constitution in 1975-''77, unsatisfactory handling of Punjab, during 1979-''84 and Assam agitation of early 1980''s, the total pro Soviet foreign policy, from 1969 till Soviet collapse in 1991, Indira Gandhi supporting Soviet invasion of Afghan at United Nations and many other issues inevitably had made A. B. Vajpayee’s BJP very popular. Indians, especially younger generation was very much convinced that BJP was alternate to Congress more so after five party coalitions Janata Party government failed in 1980. The live media coverage in India began around 1992-93.

The world saw live coverage on CNN and other networks demolition attempt of Masjid, and Godhra incident, and L. K. Advani''s Hindutva came under attack nationally and internationally. With L. K. Advani''s expected retirement from active politics a moderate BJP which was existence under Jana Sangh and thereafter as BJP from 1950 to 1993 may reshape to include all Indians and may be a stable political force for generations to come.

There is no dearth of such comments from all ''after-the-event-wise'' journalists/newsmen. The truth is that the average rural voter in any part of India does not vote for a Manmohan Singh, or an L K Advani, but for his everyday living and the issues that affect it.

In such a scenario to claim that it was ''moderate'' Manmohan Singh''s'' appeal that won the election for the UPA, whereas Advani''s hardliner image cost him and the NDA is nothing but the claim of the pseudo-intellectuals that claim to know a lot but actually have no feel for the pulse of the common man.

This is definitely not the end of the road for BJP. They lost the election but not routed out like left and so called secular third front. People are still with BJP. The results in Karnataka shows that trivial issues such as pub attack is not an issue for an electorate. Eventhough media raked this issue now and again but people of managalore gave an fitting response by electing Mr Navin Kateel.

I also appreciate Advani''s stand to decline the leader of opposition which shows that he does not want to hang around for the sake of power unlike many politician who would like to continue or hand over the mantle to their sons and daughters. Now I hope that by getting majority of their own Congress and Mr Manmohan singh will take bold decision. Now they dont have any excuses or blame left for the policy decisions.
