Beltangady: Afforestation programme at Arasinamakki held by SAC students, NECF activists

Media Release

Beltangady, Jun 26: About 38 students of Sahaya team of SAC along with rector Fr Dionysius Vaz, in association with 15 environmental activists of National Environment Care Federation (NECF) planted 450 saplings of various fruit-bearing trees to increase the green cover of the reserve forest area in Arasinamakki village in Beltangady taluk of DK district on June 23. They planted mango, jackfruit, wild jackfruit, kokum, butter fruit and jamun saplings.

Shashidhar Shetty, convener of NECF, told that the saplings will be planted during monsoon through these types of drives. He also said that the purpose of planting such fruit-bearing saplings is to mitigate the conflict between man and animal in the future because as and when the plants grow and yield, animals can eat the fallen fruits. The students also collected the waste like beer bottles and other trash discarded by miscreants and handed them over to the local gram panchayat for disposal.

Harish Poonja, MLA of Beltangady, appreciated the students of SAC and members of the NECF for initiating this unique drive for protecting the environment.
