Recall pardon granted to Punjab policemen in fake encounter case: Sukhbir

Chandigarh, Jul 3 (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday urged Punjab Governor V.P. Singh Badnore to recall the pardon granted to four policemen who abducted and murdered a Sikh youth in a fake encounter, besides ordering a probe to expose the conspiracy behind the "illegal and illogical" recommendation.

SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal met the Governor here.

He was accompanied by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Gobind Singh Longowal and the father and sister of the 22-year-old Sikh youth Harjit Singh, who was murdered by the four policemen.

Briefing the Governor, Badal said the four cops were awarded life imprisonment in December 2014 by the Special Judge of the Central Bureau of Investigation court 18 years after the Punjab and Haryana High Court referred the case to the CBI for investigation.

He said the convicts had appealed against the judgment and that appeal was pending before the high court.

"Pardon cannot be granted in such cases where an appeal in pending," the SAD chief said, adding that "Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is totally unjustified in recommending the pardon and it amounts to misleading the Governor".
