Panaji: Water levels in reservoirs rise after heavy rain

Daijiworld Media Network – Goa (EP)

Panaji, Jul 12: Heavy rains in the state on Thursday helped to tide over the water scarcity in the state. Anjunem dam in which the level of water was as low as 6% during summer was full by about 28% within ten days.

Among five reservoirs, four of them are more than half full. Anjunem reservoir from which water is supplied to a part of Sattari, Bicholim and Bardez is a tributary of the Valvanti in the Mhadei basin.

Water level at the reservoir at Selaulim, from where water is supplied to most parts of south Goa has risen to more than half. It was only about 20% till the first week of July this year. The reservoir is situated in Sanguem and is the source of water for Salcete, Mormugao, Sanguem and Quepem. The Amthane reservoir from which water is supplied to parts of Bicholim and Bardez has water to the level of 65% at present.

The inbuilt mechanism in four dams in Goa releases excess water. The gates are opened manually only in the case of Anjunem dam. People in nearby villages are alerted before release of water.
