Indian Students Take Out Rally in Australia Against Racial Attacks

Indian students take out rally in Australia against racial attacks

Press Trust of India

MELBOURNE, May 31: Outraged over the spate of racial attacks in Australia, hundreds of Indian students on Sunday took out a massive rally here demanding justice for the victims of recent assaults, including 25-year-old Shravan Kumar who is battling for life in a local hospital.

The 'peace rally' organized by bodies like Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA) and National Union of Students kicked off from outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where Kumar is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens on Sunday last.

From the hospital, the marchers proceeded to the Victorian Parliament in Spring Street, where they shouted slogans like 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

"We want justice for the victims of racist violence," demanded the students, who also displayed placards carrying messages like 'Save our Students' and 'Stop Racist Violence'.

Police were present in strength to maintain law and order as the rally led to traffic diversion at the Spring Street, which was completely blocked by the demonstrators who hoped to meet the Victorian Parliamentarians to put forward their demands.

Reacting to the students' rally, Indian Consul General in Melbourne, Anita Nayar, described it as freedom of expression.

"Australia is a democratic country and it (this rally) is freedom of expression," she said. However, she hoped that that event remained peaceful and did not turn ugly.

Television footage of Kumar fighting for life in the hospital sent shock waves among the 95,000-strong Indian student community in Australia, which is home to over 4 lakh international students.

FISA had said on Saturday that the rally was being organized in response to the growing anger in the Indian community against increasing hate crimes.

"The purpose is to create an awareness about an increasing number of hate crimes within the state (of Victoria) and to promote racial harmony and peace," FISA had said in a statement.

Another Indian student, Baljinder Singh, stabbed by two attackers recently, has been discharged from hospital while Rajesh Kumar, who suffered 30 per cent burns after a petrol bomb was hurled at him in his home, was being treated in a Sydney hospital.

Insisting that Australia is not a racist country, John McCarthy, its High Commissioner in New Delhi, said "we should cooperate to ensure that incidents of atrocities don't occur."

"We should ensure Indian students are well-informed about Australia which is generally a very safe country. We are proud of our record as a multi-cultural country," he said.

India has the best education on earth from primary to post higher education. Why study abroad for fame or name. Foreign governments make money on this. When do we Indians understand?

I completely disagree with you Harry. Some students like me pay nearly AU$55,000 (Rs. 20 lakhs) for our 2 year masters programs which is an investment of a lifetime. Packing our bags and coming back to India is definitely not even an option for us. I was part of the protest but all it did was aggravate Australians even more as we disrupted peak hour traffic.

It is indeed unsafe living in Melbourne now with the increasing attacks on Indian students. We are, undoubtedly afraid but have to stay on till we finish our education. Our demands have been put across to the Victorian parliamentarians and we should hear from them in the next couple of days.

I have heard that once Australia was a place for British to keep prisoners. Australia grew with these people and became a Sovereign Country. Now we are blaming them after accepting to study or work under these people... It is shame on us...

I feel very sorry for the students attached and pray to God that this will not happen any more. Indian students needs to be taught to speak softly and politely in public during their introductory sessions - when in Rome do as the Romans do..

Thank God nobody is permanent in this world. Otherwise everybody will be trying to drink the others blood and become strong. Racism should be condemned everywhere. All should be human beings first to see a peaceful world. I am superior to you is beginning of this kind of tortures.

Very good idea Harry. Let them do this and see what fellow Indians treat them or how they are treating other Indians. Why bother racism in Australia, we have enough in Mangalore, is there any difference between racism and communual fight.

All Indians who are there in Australia are there by their own choice!! Australian Govt or universities have not taken you there by force. If you cannot live there, come back to Indian universities...if you think they are more safe. What is done cannot be undone. So instead of protesting, please pack your bags and come back home

Some of the Indians who live in Australia or who are here as students, they either forget their culture or they are ashamed to call themselves as Indians. Some of the Indian students that I have noticed in Sydney are very rude, loud and pass comments on the Aussies either in Hindi or other Indian languages.

I am proud to call myself an Indian, but at the same time we should respect the people from other countries and their culture. It is sad that the students were attacked. Let''s wait and see, how the Australian government to solve this problem. Maureen, Sydney - Australia
