Act against 'juggad' rickshaws, HC tells police

New Delhi, Jul 24 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the police to crack down on 'juggad rickshaws' -- which are assembled using scrap parts of mainly decrepit scooters and pedal rickshaws.

A Division Bench presided by Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice C. Harishankar asked the Delhi Police to take necessary action.

The order was passed as the court heard a petition filed by a Shiv Kumar through advocate Rajdipa Berua seeking the court's direction to the Centre not to allow the 'jugaad rickshaws' in their current form to ply on the road as they violate the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The plea also sought directions to regulate the plying of such vehicles and frame appropriate guidelines to bring them in line with law.

"Jugaad rickshaws in their current state are a menace to the safety and security of the pedestrians and other road users. Incidents of accidents by 'jugaad' have been rampant across Delhi," the plea said.
