Central approves deployment of 10,000 additional troops to Kashmir

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi (SR)

New Delhi, Jul 27: The Ministry Of Home affairs has approved the deployment of 10,000 additional troops of the paramilitary forces to Jammu and Kashmir to strengthen the counter-insurgency grid and maintain law and order situation in the state.

National Security advisor Ajit Doval was apparently camping in Srinagar since last four days and during his stay he held meetings with top security and intelligence officials. The decision to send the troops came after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval returned from his Kashmir trip. 100 additional contingents of security forces will be deployed out of which 50 will be from the CRPF, 10 from BSF, 30 from SSB and 10 from ITBP. Each contingent will have 100 soldiers and as per sources the troops are being airlifted from various parts of the country to Jammu and Kashmir.

As per the order issued by the Home Ministry the additional forces are being deployed to strengthen "counter insurgent grid" as well as maintaining law and order in Kashmir. Director General of Jammu and Kashmir police Dilbag Singh said "There are less troops in north Kashmir and that's why we need additional forces. 100 companies have been airlifted and that's what we had asked for," said Dilbag Singh. Recently, around 40,000 additional central paramilitary forces were brought in for Amarnath Yatra security.

The latest development however has not gone well with the top leaders in Jammu & Kashmir. Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti Tweeted, “There is no dearth of security forces in Kashmir. J&K is a political problem which won’t be solved by military means. GOI needs to rethink & overhaul its policy.” The move has created fear psychosis among people, Mufti said.

Former Chief Minister and National Conference Vice-President, Omar Abdullah, said: “It’s surprising, to say the least, that instead of calming tempers and reassuring people in the Valley, a large section of the administration is busy trying to scare people to expect massive unrest and trouble after August 15.”

While there are rumours that the BJP government is likely to abolish Articles 370 and 35A within the first 100 days of its government, and the recent deployment is in that regard, Dilbag Singh said any other motive attributed to the troop induction is only speculation.

In 2018, the death toll for militants and security forces in Kashmir touched the highest point in a decade, according to official figures, with more than 324 killed. Human rights groups put the civilian fatalities at over 100. Almost no experts believe the situation will improve in the short term.

The insurgency in J&K began in 1989 and has ebbed and flowed in the intervening years. Pakistan has lent active support to the militancy, much to India’s fury. The number of militants is thought to be only a few hundred today, far less than at the insurgency’s peak in the 1990s and early 2000s.

According to Indian estimates, there were 583 violations in 2014, 405 in 2015, 449 in 2016, 971 in 2017 and 1,432 in 2018. The figures also show a sharp rise from the United Progressive Alliance years.

While the conflict deepened, growing saffron mobilisations in Jammu, which had largely voted BJP, also had reverberations in the Valley. They peaked after an eight-year-old Muslim Bakerwal girl was allegedly gangraped and killed in Jammu’s Kathua district in January 2018. All the accused were Hindu. Rallies launched in defense of the accused were attended by prominent leaders of the BJP. Meanwhile, in the Kashmir Valley, there were protest marches demanding justice for the murdered child.

In the last 5 years, J&K saw a 93% rise in the death of security personnel in terror attacks
The Pulwama terror attack is the biggest in recent years but govt data show there has been a 176% rise in the number of terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir between 2014 and 2018.

At least 40 CRPF jawans were killed in Pulwama terror attack. Between 2014 and 2018, terrorist incidents in J&K saw a rise of 176%. Govt data show that 11 terrorists infiltrate into J&K every month.
The PM Modi government has completely failed in restoring peace in the valley. Instead, it is behind political interest like Article 370 and reorganizing the assemblies constitution for political gain.
