Talcher Coalfields stir hits power plants in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jul 29 (IANS): Work at Talcher Coalfields of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) remained paralysed for the sixth day on Monday affecting supply to coal-fired power plants.

Output at the Talcher Coalfields, producing 2.1 lakh tonne a day during the rainy season, came to a halt on July 24 after the Bharatpur Open Cast Project (OCP) accident, said an MCL official on Monday.

Three people were killed and nine others injured in a strata collapse that triggered a landslide in the mine on Tuesday.

The agitated miners are demanding a high-level probe and adequate compensation to the families of deceased.

The company has not been able to produce or dispatch coal due to mines' closure. The operational stoppage had caused Rs 85.68 crore loss to the company and Rs 55.46 crore loss to the state and central exchequer, the company said in a statement. It resulted in 1,339.42 million units generation loss, it added.

NTPC's Kaniha unit and NALCO are facing fuel crisis due to this.

While MCL is diverting two rakes of coal from Ib Valley Coalfields to Kaniha NTPC to save it from further crisis, efforts have been made to divert one rake coal from Basundhara area under Ib Valley Coalfields to NALCO, the statement said.
