Over 6,000 drunk drivers held in SL in 3 weeks


Colombo, Jul 30 (IANS): Over 6,000 drunk drivers have been arrested in Sri Lanka over the last three weeks in a special island-wide operation, the police said on Tuesday.

A total of 6,315 such drivers were arrested from across the country as of Tuesday in the special operation which will end on August 5, Xinhua news agency reported.

Police Spokesperson S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said the drunk drivers would be fined 25,000 Sri Lankan rupees (about $142.94) and police officers who arrested the drunk drivers will also be rewarded.

Road accidents claimed over 3,000 lives in Sri Lanka in 2018.
