Margao, Jul 31: Margao Municipal Council resolved to name the newly commissioned road from Arlem Circle to Ravindra Bhavan Circle in Fatorda as ‘Manohar Parrikar Road’.
Councillor Lyndon Pereira suggested that since a total of Rs 80 crore was spent on constructing this iconic road which boasts of first-of-its-kind, dedicated underground duct to house all pipelines for water, electricity and sewerage and to accommodate all other fibre optic cables and to appreciate the efforts of late. Former chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s contribution to sanction funds to the tune of Rs 200 crore for various projects in Fatorda it would be apt to name this road after Manohar Parrikar.
Councillor Glenn Andrade suggested that a statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira be installed at the Ravindra Bhavan traffic island to commemorate the ‘Father of the Opinion Poll’. Other resolutions adopted were to name the road around the Hospicio Hospital as Padre Miranda Square, renaming of the Bolshe Circle at Gogol as ‘St Joaquim Circle’, the Varde Valaulikar road was renamed as ‘Shenoi Goembab Road’ since Varde Valaulikar was more popularly known as Shenoi Goembab. The traffic island at the Gogol-Housing Board junction was named after noted Konkani writer and activist ‘Floriano Vaz’.
