Lucknow, Aug 1: Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been expelled by the BJP for raping Unnao teen, threatening her family and for carrying out an attempt to murder. Earlier in July, Unnao rape survivor and her lawyer were critically wounded and two of her relatives were killed in a car crash by a truck that had its number plate painted black. The girl is still critical and is put on ventilator, according to the medical personnel treating her.
The accident is under CBI investigation as the accused leader Sengar was blamed for orchestrating the accident. The Unnao rape case highlighted the police callousness, administrative disregard and the harassment faced by the teen and her family at the hands of a politician who was getting away with breaking the law. Strong outrage was directed towards BJP as people demanded the removal of Sengar.
Earlier this week, the BJP claimed that Kuldeep Sengar was expelled, but did not specify when the step was taken. The expulsion announcement was made hours after severe embarrassment was faced in the Supreme Court by the party’s government in UP on Aug 1.
The court moved four cases linked to the Unnao rape survivor out of Uttar Pradesh to Delhi. The court also asked for an immediate report from the CBI on the rape case and ordered that the investigation into the car accident be completed in seven days. Although the teen was raped in 2017, her complaint was registered by the police only after she went public last year. The teen had threatened to immolate herself outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Lucknow home, if she was not given justice.
Confirming the expulsion, Deputy Chief Minister, Dinesh Sharma stated that the job was done, "We did our best; the government took its responsibility seriously. An FIR was filed against the accused and the CBI is also probing.”
