Phensedyl, cattle seized by BSF in Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 2 (IANS): The Border Security Force seized 1,365 bottles of banned cough syrup Phensedyl and cattle while they were being smuggled to Bangladesh, during a number of raids in West Bengal's Malda district, an officer from BSF's South Bengal frontier said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the BSF troopers conducted a raid in Malda district's Nawada outpost at 11 p.m. on Thursday and seized 865 bottles of Phensedyl from a group of smugglers. The miscreants, however, managed to flee from the spot taking advantage of darkness, the officer said.

In another raid, troopers from the district's Anuradhapur, seized another 500 bottles of Phensedyl. The cost of the seized drug is around Rs 2.10 lakh.

In the wee hours of Friday, the BSF personnel at the border outpost Boyraghat in Malda district challenged a group of cattle smugglers, who were trying to transport cattle to Bangladesh through the Ganga and seized 22 cattle.

An alert was issued across the district and another cattle smuggling effort was foiled near Sovapur border outpost on the same night. 11 cattle were seized from there.

"The BSF parties managed to intercept cattle smugglers in other bordering districts of West Bengal and seized 45 more cattle on Friday," the officer added.
