Punjab man ends life after killing 5 family members

Chandigarh, Aug 3 (IANS): A 27-year-old agriculturalist who was under depression committed suicide after he shot dead five members of his family in a village in Punjab with a stolen revolver over alleged land sale dispute, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Nathuwal village near Moga on Friday night, police said.

Sandeep Singh allegedly shot dead his grandmother, father, mother, sister and her three-year-old daughter and later shot himself, a police officer said.

His grandfather Gurcharan Singh received bullet injuries.

A 19-page suicide note said the ancestral land sale by the family disturbed him.

He also cited his proposed marriage in December, which was against his wishes, as the reason for the extreme step. He wrote that he was "impotent", but his family deliberately concealed this fact from his would-be groom.

Locals said Sandeep, who was the only child, took the extreme step in a fit of rage.

Village sarpanch Jagsir Singh said as per the suicide note, the weapon used in the crime was stolen from a relative's place.

The victims had a big house built in the village.
