Unnao rape victim still critical, develops pneumonia

Lucknow, Aug 3 (IANS): The Unnao rape victim, who was seriously injured in a car accident, has developed pneumonia and remains in a critical condition, doctors treating her at a hospital in Lucknow said on Saturday.

King George's Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre in-charge Dr Sandeep Tiwari said that the 19-year-old girl is on ventilator or life support system since the last six days and has now developed pneumonia. A team of doctors is keeping her under continuous observation.

"Any patient who is kept on ventilator for several days starts showing symptoms of pneumonia. This is why she developed pneumonia. Her condition remains the same as before," Dr Tiwari said.

He said the victim has several broken bones and wounds in her chest. There has been minor improvement in her condition but it cannot be considered as satisfactory, he added.

"Due to the accident, the victim lost about one-and-a-half litres of blood. After being brought to hospital, she had to be administered 10 units of blood. The biggest challenge for the doctors now is to take her off the ventilator. Blood has also been drained out of her lungs."

The KGMU spokesperson said the victim has several fractures. Her state of unconsciousness could be due to excessive bleeding and a possible internal injury to her head. Doctors of the neuro department are also treating her.

The right side of her body has been affected as she has sustained fractures in her jaw, ribs and thigh. Her broken thighbone has been plastered, he said.

Doctors said her lawyer Mahendra Singh's condition has shown some improvement and he has been taken off the ventilator completely.

The victim and her lawyer are admitted in the ICU of the neuro trauma ward on the fourth floor of the KGMU Trauma Centre.

Unnao rape case worse than Nirbhaya. The victim, raped when she was just 17 and who is now 19, is fighting for his life in a Lucknow hospital. Head injuries, legs fractured and with blood reported in the lungs, she is said to be critical. Father tortured death by the brother of rapist and mother died in trauma and aunt murdered in the accident. Also critical is her lawyer in whose Swift Dzire she and her aunts had gone to Rae Bareli jail to meet her uncle.
The truck which hit the Swift Dzire on Sunday, July 28, had its number plate blackened. It was being driven on the wrong side and at high speed. The truck belongs to someone known to the BJP MLA Senger and hails from the same locality.
The Supreme Court’s ruling in the Unnao rape case is a “stamp” on the prevailing “jungle raj” in Uttar Pradesh and the state government’s failure.
Those outraged by SP leader Azam Khan’s sexist remark in Parliament have strangely been silent on the plight of the Unnao rape survivor and her continuing trauma as the 19-year-old battles for life.

The rape victim in an attempt murder case by running over by truck battling for life. But another MLA from Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh has extended support to the expelled MLA Kuldeep Sengar, who is at present in jail for allegedly raping a girl in 2017. Accused number seven in the FIR, Arun Singh, is a Bharatiya Janata Party worker and a block president in Unnao, the rape survivor’s hometown. Arun Singh is the son-in-law of Ranvendra Pratap Singh aka "Dhunni Bhaiyya”, a minister in the Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh. Singh is the minister in charge of agriculture, agriculture education and research.

In a picture taken during the campaigning for recently held Lok Sabha election, Arun Singh can be spotted with the then BJP president and now Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Unnao BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj.

Are electing animals to rule us? Don't blame them, it is our fault. Today it is Unnao and tomorrow it could be anyone's sister. What a miserable life this innocent family has to go through. When some people raised to power, they become devils.

I have a suggestion. Every constituency has to conduct its own preliminary election, before the general election, with the help of NGO and select a candidate who has no party affiliation, no criminal records, well educated, social worker, demonstrated good leadership, below 50 years of age and maintained good standing in the constituency. Then he/she should run for the general election from that constituency. We should boycott the party candidate system because most of the time they are given ticket for their money power and muscle power. We don't want our leader become breeder.

The people of the country should unite and ensure that the persons responsible for her plight are brought to book without delay. It is widely believed that a BJP MLA is behind all this and although the party has suspended him, that will not be sufficient. The person should be sent to the gallows, if found guilty. Modi is not tired of repeating 'Beti bachao, beti padao.' This is the time for him to prove that he is as good as his word. We have been hearing his speeches for the last five years but his actions have been limited to that. The government should also consider shifting the victim to AIIMS where she can get better treatment than what she is getting from this Lucknow hospital. And we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the CM of this state happens to be Yogi.
