Panaji, Aug 6: Even as the coastal state continued witnessing rainfall on Monday, Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains for next three days issuing orange alert in Goa.

Several low lying areas witnessed flood-like situation on Sunday and Monday with stretches of road going underwater. The incessant rains are hitting the state since last week.

IMD in its bulletin issued on Monday said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over North and South Goa. “Heavy rainfall at a few places with very heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to occur over North and South Goa during three days,” the bulletin adds.

The department has issued orange alert for the state asking the people to be prepared.

The fishermen are advised not to venture in the Sea, though the State fisheries department has lifted the ban on fishing in the state from August 01 onwards. The department has predicted strong winds with speed reaching 45-50 kilometres per hour gusting to 65 KMPH likely to prevail along and off Maharashtra-Goa coast during next two days from Monday.

The issue of incessant rains also surfaced during ongoing monsoon session of the House with MLAs demanding that the rivers be desilted to ensure that the roads don’t get flooded.

BJP MLA Antonio Fernandes said that the roads in his constituency of St Cruz, near Panaji, are inundated as the government has failed to desilt the rivers.
