Beginning of a new era in J&K, Ladakh: Modi

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on Thursday said that it is the beginning of a "new era" in Jammu and Kashmir and asserted that the rights of all the people across the country are now same.

"This is the beginning of a new era in Jammu and Kashmir. Now the rights as well as responsibilities of people across the country are equal," Modi said in his first address to the nation after the formation of the 17th Lok Sabha.

In his almost 40-minute long speech, Modi also congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh after the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution which gave special status to the region, and the Parliament's nod to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh sans one.

    Modi's and Shah's and BJPs disregard to human rights in Kashmir is a blatant violation of human rights in democracy like India. Arresting key Kashmiri leaders like Omar Abdullah. Mufti and Others sends a signal to the world that it is prepared to violate human rights to achieve its purposes while complaining about human rights violations across the world including Pakistan.

    Unilateral decision to Scrap Art 370 is an indication that it gives a damn to serious democratic and human rights in India. Excluding Kashmiri people and their representatives in discussions of a issue like scrapping Art 370 was a prerequisite in matured democracies.

    How can India call itself a "democracy" given the actions it has taken in J&K and preach democratic values in the future when there are human rights violations somewhere around the world?

    New Era? Modi is making more problems for Kashmiri people by inviting more trouble by abrogating Art 370.
    As long as Pakistan is the neighbour there will not be peace there. This action just increases the resolve of Pakistan to cause more problems and terrorism. Kashmiri people will be living in fear.
