Odisha woman given talaq over phone, police register case

Bhubaneswar, Aug 10 (IANS): Days after Parliament passed a Bill criminalising triple talaq, the Odisha Police have registered the first case of instant divorce in the Pattamundai area of the Kendrapara district on Saturday.

A woman has lodged a complaint with the police accusing her husband Abusufyan Khan of divorcing her on phone from Hyderabad after one year of marriage.

The victim said they were in love for the past seven years. "We had a registry marriage in February 2018 and he took me to Hyderabad. We stayed there for six months. When I got pregnant, he brought me to his home in Pattamundai," she said.

The woman alleged that she was tortured mentally and physically by in-laws for dowry during her stay there. Then she shifted to her father's house and delivered a boy three months back.

"After delivery, I called up my husband and asked him to take me to Hyderabad. But he refused to recognise me. When I insisted, he pronounced triple talaq over the phone,' the woman alleged.

The police have started the investigation.
