'Won't deliver beef or pork': Zomato staff in Howrah strike

Kolkata, Aug 12 (IANS) Food delivery staff of Zomato on Sunday went on an indefinite strike in West Bengal's Howrah, alleging they were made to deliver beef and pork dishes against their will.

"We are on strike due to our payment rates and we have to deliver beef food items which is against our religious sentiments. We are not going to do it," one of the protesters said.

There are many other delivery persons who are also opposed to delivering pork items. Their main allegation is that the company is not listening to them or paying heed to their religious beliefs.

State Irrigation Minister Rajib Banerjee has backed the protesters.

"I strongly oppose the management's decision as hurting people's religious sentiments is unacceptable. I fully support their protest as the management should agree with them, otherwise there can be a big problem," Banerjee told IANS.

The minister said he has made it very clear that the delivery executives will get his full support. He assured that he will look into the matter and take required steps.

Zomato, in a statement, said "a small group of partners" have raised concerns and it was looking to resolve the issue.

"In a country as diverse as India, it is impossible to ensure that vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences are factored into delivery logistics. Delivery partners are unequivocally made to understand the practical nature of the job as they choose to enter the workforce.

"All our partners understand this fully. There is a small group of partners in Howrah who have raised concerns and we are looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," a company spokesperson said.

China, under Mao, managed to push "religious sentiments" off the menu. Pardon the pun.

And, decades later, is seeing tremendous growth in every sphere of activity.

India's preoccupation with "religious sentiments" will keep holding the country back.

There demand is logic. Dont force hindu to deliver pork and beef meats it's after all there religious belief. Do muslims buy meat from hindu owned shop either chicken sheep meat rejecting not killed according to there norm of halala. Dont force anybody to conduct such work. Enough is enough. When you people stick to your belief why not others. We know how to handle such situations very well. Suffering not by others..but others..when they announce there community members not to buy or purchase things from shop of other community members.

This is silly. Do you understand the scale of Zomato's business? It wouldn't be possible to assign a particular person based on what food is being delivered. It has been made very clear as they join the job that they will be delivering different kinds of food.

Besides, are they being asked to eat what they don't want to? It's just a job! Deliver the food and mind your own business! It's a shame what kind of intolerance is being normalized in this country. Absolute shame.

We love to see belief system increased amongst people on there religion which is absent in the past. People themselves now aware what is good what is bad for them. It's a good sign of unity to build nation. In olden days people separated much not bothered much of religion. While looking other religions force to apply there things..on others..people now become alert. Let it be a common civil code followed by all. Things will be sorted out much. Desh Badal Raha Hai.
Good impact on coming west bengal vidhan sabha elections.

If a vegetarian chef can cook pork and beef, what is the harm in delivering. It will not make a difference to Zomato. They can recruit neutral staff for delivery. These so called fanatics can sleep and remain jobless all life long waiting for indian entrepreneurs to start set-ups according to their whims and fancies. Ha ha ha. Indian government want foreign companies to come to India and create more jobs here and these people are only waiting to create unnecessary problems.

Business has no religious sentiments. If someone can't do the job then they should not do it. Resign and go home.
