'I-Day to be celebrated in grand manner across J&K, Ladakh'

Srinagar, Aug 13 (IANS): Independence Day celebrations will be carried out in a grand manner in all the districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, for which dress rehearsals are underway, Jammu and Kashmir Principal Secretary (Planning) Rohit Kansal said on Tuesday.

The Independence Day celebrations on such a large scale would be the first such in Jammu and Kashmir, where earlier official-level functions were held under close security in the stadium in Srinagar.

The Independence Day celebrations and the rehearsals for it come after India revoked the special status for Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre has said it will unfurl the tricolour at Lal Chowk and across Jammu and Kashmir.

"As we speak, dress rehearsals are underway in all districts of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, Independence Day celebrations will be carried out in a grand manner," Kansal said.

Referring to the taking down of anti-national Twitter handles, Kansal said: "Due cognisance has been taken of the fake handles, and any handles that create disaffection are being tackled at all levels."

He also said that the Eid celebrations in Kashmir were largely peaceful.

"Following peaceful Eid-al-Adha celebrations across various parts of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, prohibitory conditions were further relaxed in various parts."

He said Jammu region is almost entirely free of restrictions while they continue in parts of Kashmir.
