Jana Sena MLA held for attack on police station

Amaravati, Aug 13 (IANS): Jana Sena Party (JSP) legislator R. Varaprasad Rao in Andhra Pradesh was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly attacking a police station in the West Godavari district. He was later released on bail.

Rao was taken into custody with his 15 followers for attacking the Malikipuram police station. The JSP MLA from Rajzole was booked on Monday for damaging public property and preventing the police from discharging their duty.

The MLA had gone to the police station after his followers were arrested on charges of playing cards. Objecting to the action, the MLA staged a sit-in at the police station with his supporters.

The police later registered a case against Rao and his supporters for attacking the station. The MLA surrendered before the police on Tuesday.

AJSP president and Telugu actor Pawan Kalyan condemned the arrest and said Rao had gone to the station on the request of people. The incident reflected the government bias as no action was taken against MLA of the ruling YSR Congress Party for attacking a journalist in the Nellore district, he said.
