Lucknow, Jun 20: The Government Railway Police (GRP) Lakhimpur on Friday morning formally arrested the two constables who were accused of throwing a
pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter off a moving train after she refused to bribe them for travelling without a ticket on Thursday afternoon.
Infuriated over the woman's death, relatives and neighbours of the deceased mobbed the Tikuniya railway halt and caught hold of the two constables who were then severely assaulted. By the time the cops were rescued, they had suffered multiple injuries and had to be admitted to the district hospital Khiri.
After being informed about the incident, DIG Railways BP Tripathi along with CO GRP Lucknow DSP Sunita Singh rushed to Khiri from the state capital to inquire about the incident. After the DIG found the charges levelled against the two constables prima-facie true, he ordered registration of a case against them. The case was registered on Thursday night itself at GRP Tikuniya and the two accused were formally arrested on Friday morning. "They will be sent to jail once they were discharged from the hospital," said CO GRP Lucknow Sunita Singh talking to TOI on Friday.
The sequence of events started around 1:45 pm on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar Lodh and his pregnant wife Kavita along with their 3-year-old daughter - residents of Majhrapurab village - boarded the Mailani-Gonda passenger train at Tikuniya railway halt. Dinesh, who was carrying his bicycle, reportedly tied it to the grill of the toilet window of the coach before getting on the train. The train had barely began moving when two constables of Mailani GRP station deployed on board the train allegedly demanded Rs 100 from the couple for travelling with their bicycle.
However, since the couple was not carrying enough money, Kavita offered a Rs 5 note. This left the cops so agitated that they pushed Kavita off the train.
