Udupi, Aug 22: Unemployment is the biggest issue faced by the young generation in this time of fierce competition. The alternative to this is self-employment. However, this becomes difficult for rural youth as they lack the skill and cannot get entry into professional institutes, which offer courses on service-oriented industries due to minimum entry level eligibility issue. Though some of the youth are involved in business, they need to update their market knowledge and developments in technology. If the chances of self-employment should increase, then it is necessary to provide the skills required for the same from their student life itself," said Manjunath R Nayak, director of Synd rural self-employment training institute (SyndRSETI), who participated as the resource person in the self-employment training awareness
programme that was organized by the career counselling and placement cell of St Mary's College at Shirva.

Manjunath Nayak further said, "SyndRSETI provides self-employment training free of cost. In addition, it provides financial assistance in the form of bank credit to resolve teething problems while establishing a business. It also provides support and advisory services for the business.

Prof Rajan V N, who presided over the function said that the students should make use of such free training and make their future bright. Lieutenant K Praveen Kumar, director of career counselling and placement cell did the introductory speech and conveyed the aim of the programme.

As many as 135 students of final year of graduation and post-graduation, teaching and non-teaching staff were present in the programme. Prayer song was sung by Vishwalatha Prabhu. Vote of thanks was rendered by Tanuja N Suvarna, joint director of the cell. Branson V D'Souza, leader of students' council welcomed the gathering.
