Avoid Congested City Traffic - Flying Cars Coming Soon !

By Gurmukh Singh

Toronto, June 24 (IANS): The flying car is on its way.

An American company Terrafugia Transition, based near Boston, is set to unveil the dual-purpose car-cum-plane vehicle called 'The Flying Car' as early as 2011. The two-seater vehicle can let you fly if you wish to avoid the congested city traffic.

If you want to drive on the road, just touch the road. The vehicle will fold up its wings in 30 seconds and transform itself into a car.

"The Flying Car" can travel up to 725 kilometres in the air at a speed of more than 115 kilometres per hour.

Fuelled by gasoline, it has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight.

With its wings folded, it can be parked in your ordinary car garage.

Its initial cost is expected to be around $200,000 (nearly Rs.1 crore), says the company which has already orders for 60 vehicles.

The CEO of the company told Canadian TV (CTV) network here that they have successfully test-flown "The Flying Car" as many as 28 times.

The tests have shown that the vehicle can drive, fly and switch from being a plane to a car in just 30 seconds.

"It (testing) has been very successful," Carl Dietrich, co-founder and CEO of Terrafugia, told the television network.

He said: " We have got a very good handling vehicle and our test pilot said that the flights were just remarkably unremarkable - it just flies like a really nice, little airplane."

He said this miracle vehicle will ease problems for pilots who currently face problems like weather which sometimes doesn't allow them to take off or land.

"This vehicle allows a pilot any time, if the weather changes, to divert to the nearest airport, fold up their wings and drive safely under the weather."

Company vice president Richard Gersh told IANS: "The Transition (the name for "The Flying Car") is not designed to replace the automobile. However, it will solve transportation issues for a variety of circumstances."

Asked whether the vehicle will be mass produced one day, he said: "That is certainly a possibility, but a number of years away."

He said the vehicle will be able travel on ordinary roads.

"Our depositors represent a wide-cross section in terms of age, interests, and intended use of the vehicle. We have deposits from both experienced pilots and non-pilots who intend to earn their Sport Pilot certificate," said the vice president of Terrafugia.

Set up in 2006, Terrafugia is run by trained aeronautical engineers and MBAs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The reality is, this car is now flying. Problems faced will be solved later on. Each car can be given it''s own frquency like individual cell phone number and hooked to satelite above and can be controlled from accidents like the Anticollusion Device used now in Konkan Railway for trains for collusion. Has anybody seen birds flying in sky in group dashed against each other? Some say building castles in the air is not good. But late Dhirubhai Amabani said it is good. Because, then your 50% job is down. Now you build the foundation. He did it and built his large business empire. Be optimistic.

Mr. Ashwin, Mangalore, Singapore, I have great respect for all holy books and there is no poison in my comments. I have asked Mr. Adithya to correct me if I am mistaken and moreover my intention was not to hurt anyone’s feeling. I also know the fact that Geetha is a Holy book wherein one get millions of valuable input and does not have any connection with Ramayana. That is the reason I want to read and understand. However, I understand that it is available only in Sanskrit, which I cannot read. You can also help me to obtain one, if it is available in other languages. In regard to the miracles in Israel, not many people only Jesus Christ brought dead people back to life and he himself raised from the dead. His apostles also performed miracles with the power of holy sprit. You may read Holy Bible and come to a conclusion yourself, in which you will get enough proof to believe.

I am sure that the company has thought only about the conjestion and not about the disadvantages. Like.. easy way for terrorist attacks, Problems in Air Trafic Controlling and etc. Although its looks cheaper but the cost of mantainiance will be very expensive. It is like having a private jet. The only difference is.. it can change into a car.

Technology always was used for destructive purposes than constructive. This too would change the strategy of terrorists in future to avoid security checkposts & attack vital installations. Security Agencies need to take more proactive steps to avoid future attacks through this mode, rather than react to one like always they did in the past including Parliament or Mumbai attacks.

This machine may not be meant to fly high altitude, where the wind speed is much greater. The idea of producing this equipment may be only to avoid traffic congestion by taking off from the road and landing on the road and might fly an altitude of 300 to 500 feet unlike Jet engines which can fly an altitude of 37000 ft. This machine can avoid traffic signals and round about and follow the road direction. However according to the present scenario, any flying machine must carry a recorded identification, like flight number, this might create a problem for the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC).

I am waiting for the next news that man can fly in the air where-ever he/she likes with fitted wings to his/her body. I hope it it will not take 10 years to come true. These are not dreams. Man can do these things if he try to invent.

These cars will definitely work, day by day improve it’s technology and will modify it’s shape and one day it becomes complete flying cars (same as flying objects, what we hear & see in cartoons today) and will rule the world same as present road running cars. Presently it’s run by gasoline, but in the future it will be run by different fuels, such as nuclear. The sophisticated high technology will take place to show proper routing (presently we use GPS).

Day by Day human invent new technology to cooperate with that day''s requirement. As a side effect of these things will lead us towards Global warming & over population. The population will start sinking slowly because of over heat, no proper drinking water, etc. Human can & will invent many things to survive & Live rich, but he can’t bring back the present & past nature resources.

Human will become very smart but he can’t control global disaster. This disaster will lead towards becoming Earth / Globe as a Fire Ball. It may take many many years, but it’s already started. So pls believe some one saying ''same as earth there was a planet & now it’s not fit to live''!!! We can’t stop but we can delay the disaster. Be GREEN.

Not practical since you cannot drive this with a normal driving license. If there are around 100 of these flying in a city, what about the airspace. Crashes for sure! This sounds like a fairytale. A good thought by the company, which is very difficult to bring to task.

Definitely a number of years away plus does not sound practical. Instead of trying to avoid traffic, you may be stuck in the airport waiting for the control tower to give permission to land...I am not sure it can land in any normal road where traffic is flowing...need more clarity about the practicality of this concept if we need a pilot license before spending $200k on a machine being proposed.
