'Kuwait Sodun Vethana’: Goan Tiatr in Mangalore Style...

Kuwait, Jun 25: Konkani entertainment organizers around the world, specially in the gulf, always think differently on the issue of promoting Konkani culture and art. If Gulf Voice of Mangalore was a huge success in a realty show promoted by the Kuwait organizers, the new-style Konkani play recently held, stood as an example for another unique effort from them.
Now, two young men, artiste Lancy Rodrigues and Anand D'Souza, have come up with another idea to present something new to the Mangalorean audience in Kuwait. This will be the first of its kind in the gulf. Goan Tiatr is a highly successful entertainment form, not only in Goa, but wherever Goans live. For the Goan Tiatr, there is a huge Mangalorean fan following too. In Goan Tiatr, usually backed by a strong social message, script writers come-up with new and innovative concepts. Artistes on the stage not only enact their roles, but also render songs live on the stage. It is a kind of music and enacting at one go.
M Boyer, who was a big name in Goan Tiatr history, passed away recently. His magical performances were always appreciated by the audience. Whenever he came on stage, the audiences used to greet him with a thunderous applause and always kept asking for more from him in his every entry. It is a kind of 'once more' request from the audience, and Tiatr artistes never disappoint the audience. The musicians too are always ready with their instruments to perform repeatedly.
As this form is rare in Mangalorean plays, perhaps many of the audience from Mangalore may not be aware as to what exactly Tiatr is.
Under the banner of 'Konkani Kala Samiti', this new Goan Tiatr in Mangalore Konkani will be presented on September 25, 2009 at the American International School, Hawali Kuwait. 'Kuwait Sodun Vethana' (When you leave Kuwait..), is the concept written by famous Goan writer Rosary Ferns. This Tiatr has been translated into Mangalorean Konkani by Lancy Rodrigues, who also happens to be the director of the play.
As a special attraction for the show, noted Konkani composers and singers Mike Simon from Mangalore and Norbert Pereira from Doha will be flown into Kuwait to be part of this great entertainment extravaganza. Apart from these artistes, many local, well known singers and actors will also take part in the Tiatr.
Anand D'Souza, one of the organizers, who is also well experienced in the event management, expects good response to the new kind of show in Kuwait. "When we give something new to our audience, I am sure people will like and accept it," he said, while speaking to daijiworld.
More details on the show will be available online through daijiworld.com, which is the official media partner for the event.
