Mumbai: Two men arrested for stealing manhole covers, selling as scrap

Mumbai, Aug 23: Two men were arrested by Jogeshwari police, on Thursday for stealing manhole covers from many areas in the western suburbs of the city. The accused identified as Abdul Khan, a labourer and Dhiraj Singh a taxi driver stole the manhole covers and sold it in scrap.

The police said they had received several complaints from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about the missing manhole covers, on the basis of which they registered a case and initiated an enquiry. The duo were caught by red-handed by the police and four manhole lids were found in their possession. The police said, two persons got down from the cab and were attempting to steal the manhole cover when sub-inspector Abhijit Jadhav and his team of constables nabbed them.

As reported in Mumbai Mirror, police said, "We recovered four such manhole covers from the bushes of Vandevi temple in Jogeshwari East where thieves had concealed them. They told us that they were stealing them for money as they sold it to a scrap dealer. They also admitted to have stolen at least a dozen manhole covers recently and they were doing this for the past six to eight months."
