Udupi, Aug 23: Indian Red Cross Society is a voluntary humanitarian organization to protect human life and health in India.
It is part of International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. The society’s mission is to provide relief in times of disasters/ emergency and promote health and care to vulnerable people and communities.
It was founded by Jean Henry Dunant in 1863 in Geneva and succeeded in getting acceptance from the nation engaged in wars accepting Red Cross as a natural agency.
Subsequently second, third and fourth conventions were held in 1906, 1929 and 1949 respectively. As there is a financial need to undertake the activities of Red Cross every year, the Hundi collection drive and rally was organised on August 12.
This year Hundi collection drive was organised from August 10 to 13. The volunteers collected contributions from town, college staff, students and even during the Jatha. The Youth Red Cross volunteers of St Mary's College Shirva visited classrooms and people and an appeal was made through Hundi collection drive. The volunteers even briefed about Geneva Convention and also the Red Cross objectives.
An amount of Rs 51,111 was collected by the volunteers and handed over to Balakrishna Shetty K, honorary secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, Udupi district branch.
Fifty volunteers participated in the rally and asst prof Shameen Fernandes, coordinator of Youth Red Cross Unit guided the students.
