Kashmiri crop export will help farmers: Modi to UAE traders

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said that Kashmir was rich in multiple crops and if these were properly exported, it would boost the economic conditions of producers in the erstwhile state.

Modi's remarks came when he met some UAE entrepreneurs during his visit to the friendly nation on August 24 where he launched RuPay NPCI card there.

"Kashmir's soil produces best crops. If these crops are packaged in a proper way and exported, it would help Kashmir's producers economically," Modi said.

Modi was in the UAE on his three-nation five-day visit scheduled between Aug 22 and 26.

The Kashmir valley is under lockdown from last 23 days. More than 4000-6000 Kashmirs are detained without any reason including 12 years old children. The 'Centura hotel' beside the beautiful valley turned detention center for top political leaders. Cancer and critical illness patients are without medicines. Essential commodities are in acute shortage due to movement restrictions of trucks.

The great agrarian crisis hit Kashmir. Security restrictions and the absence of communication links have hit Kashmir’s multi-crore apple business. The movement of fruit trucks to the Valley has reduced from 1,200 to just 120 a day. The apple farmers are in distress due to security forces sending back outside laborers.

The world’s most expensive spice has been cultivated in the historic Indian town of Pampore for generations. After declining in recent years, the harvest of saffron in Kashmir has failed completely.

With low rates of return, limited irrigation and the high price of land because of urbanization, Kashmir’s farmlands are shrinking at an alarming rate.

PM Modi who is on travel from the last couple of week hardly knows the reality of Kasmir other than the politics.

If no opposition party of India is allowed to enter Kashmir, how do the farmers of Kashmir can export the crop before it spoils?
