Day of Arrests: Gujarat BJP Legislator Held for 2002 Riots Case

IANS

Ahmedabad, Jun 29: Monday June 29 could well be termed as day of arrests. These columns already reported the arrests of two high-profile politicians. While Raj Thackeray from Mumbai was the first one to have been arrested, Karnataka BJP MLA Renukacharya too was arrested later. Incidentally both were arrested for their inflammatory speeches provoking communal divide. Now there is one more arrest news. A Gujarat MLA has been arrested, again almost for the similar case, in connection with the now infamous Gujarat Riots of 2002.

Gujarat's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Fatehsinh Chauhan was arrested Monday for his alleged involvement in the 2002 riots in the state's Rajgarh town.

The arrest was ordered by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT). The legislator from Rajgarh was evading arrest for a long time, police said.

Chauhan would be presented before a local court in Ahmedabad later in the evening.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the riots that followed the burning of the S-6 sleeper coach of Sabarmati Express at the Godhra station on July 27, 2002, in which 59 passengers were burnt to death.

The legislator has also been reprimanded by the Election Commission for his remarks against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in Rajgarh during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

No body is above law. It should be applied in equal measures to all including the tall statured politicians. Try all those who are responsible for the death of innocent lives irrespective of their faith and political affiliation. Politicians incite the violence and go underground. Poor people across the streets pay a heavy price for it. Common people lose their loved ones.

If at all any politician responisble for these riots, has lost his son/wife/daughter in the aftermath of these hate speeches, he would have learnt a lesson and would refrain from repeating the mistake again. Judiciary is so far impartial, but no efforts should be made to influence the judiciary and justice is derailed. Criminal is a criminal and must be punished. Dont look at his religion and ffiliation. Just condemn it.

Not mere arrest, the person should undergo punishment too, at the earliest, when the victims are still alive. Justice delayed is justice denied!

We need tranperant & fast track court where everyone get justice within a short time. About arresting an MLA or MP will not surve the purpose. What ever Government of India/Gujarth doing we must wellcome but the same time we look forward & find a solution where such kind of RIOTS never happen in the future where innocent HINDU, MUSLIM /CHRISTAIN /SIKH lose thir life & property.

Each and every politician of India, whose inflammatory political sermons have sparked an inferno of religious atrocities and blood-shed, must be responsible for their actions. The politicians and their families are safe, but the people at the street kill their own neighbours and friends, each other in the name of religion.
