American woman charged for abusing Burqa clad Pune-based doctor

Pune, Aug 3: The Pune police on Sunday charged a 43-year-old American woman for assaulting a doctor for wearing burqa.

As per sources, the incident took place at Clover Centre market in Pune cantonment area, where the two women were shopping. As per police, the US woman, on seeing the burqa-clad doctor asked her if she were a Muslim. When the reply was in the affirmative, the American woman abused and assaulted her.

The 27-year-old doctor registered a complaint with the police. According to the police, the woman from US is said to be facing mental disabilities and is prone to engaging in abusive behaviour. "We have informed the US embassy about the incident," said a police official.

Police said they have registered a non-cognisable offence under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
