New Delhi, Sep 3: In a drive to regulate the illegal sale of acid, 100 traders were slapped fines worth Rs 7 lac. Over 1000 litre of corrosive acid was seized in a matter of 10 days. This was possible with the collaborative efforts of the Delhi government and the city police officials.
Acid attacks are one of the most violent crimes against women and with the easy availability, the attacks are on the rise. A special meeting was held on August 22, to discuss the illegal sale of acid by certain shops. DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal, Delhi chief secretary Anshu Prakash, Delhi government departments and other representatives of Delhi Police were part of the meeting.

Anshu Prakash, directed divisional commissioner-cum-secretary (Revenue) to form teams of area sub-divisional magistrates, DCW representatives and Delhi Police personnel against the chemical. Following this, to arrest the vendors the officials pretended to be customers.
In one of the raids, over 240 litre was seized from a small shop. The shopkeeper sold the acid without maintaining any record of the sale.
