Guntur, Sep 5: 74-year-old Mangayamma from Nelapartipadu in East Godavari district has become the oldest-ever to give birth after she delivered twins on Thursday at Ahalya Nursing Home in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur town.

Mangayamma conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process. A team of four doctors headed by Dr S Umashankar performed the caesarean operation. Dr Umashankar said both the mother and the babies were doing well. Speaking to reporters after the surgery, Umashankar said "This is a medical miracle, with this Mangayamma has become the oldest woman in the world to give birth.”

As per reports, Mangayamma and her husband Y Raja Rao spent 54 years without children. Then they decided to approach the IVF experts last year and continued the treatment.

Mangayamma expressed her happiness and said "I am very happy. God has answered our prayers." Meanwhile, her husband Raja Rao and other family members celebrated the moment by distributing sweets.

Umashankar said they conducted various tests to examine the fitness of Mangayamma before proceeding with the treatment to make sure that she is fit to become pregnant. However, Mangayamma conceived in the very first cycle of the IVF procedure "Ten doctors worked for nine months to keep a close watch on her health. The regular scans revealed that there are no complications," said the doctor, as per reports.

Doctors said both the mother and the babies would be under observation for a few days.
