Sitharaman rebuts Mamata's jibe over moon mission

Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS): Rebutting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's jibe over Indias moon mission, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said there was no need to look at it in any other way except to be proud of the country's scientists and ISRO.

Ahead of Chandrayaan-2 landing on the moon in a few hours, the Finance Minister said it is a historic achievement for mankind.

"The world over there is a great admiration for ISRO. And particularly this launch is historic in that the mission is going to touch and land in that part of the moon where no one has ever been before," she said.

Speaking in the state Assembly, Banerjee had earlier said that the Chandrayaan-2 moon mission is an attempt to divert attention from country's "economic disaster".

Sitharaman was in Kolkata to meet tax officers and representatives of trade and business as part of the series of tours across various cities to understand the ground realities of the economy.

Briefing the media after the meetings, Sitharaman said the tax department was adopting technology to make the entire process related to tax, from filing to scrutiny, completely faceless.

An attempt has been to minimise human interface while dealing with taxpayers.
